Outreach and Mission Opportunities at Mt. View

Outreach is one of the most exciting and rewarding areas of participation at Mountain View. Many opportunities mean many choices in to how to be actively involved in service to others. All members are invited to suggest ideas and to use this committee as a resource. We aim to provide direct support to those in need as well as advocacy for the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized around the world. For any of the opportunities listed below, Trudy Gygi or Bonnie Strand can be contacted for further information at 303 494 5025 or mountainviewumc@mtview.org.

NEWS

Haiti: Two Years Later

It’s almost hard to believe that two years have passed since the devastating earthquake in Haiti. During those first crucial months, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) addressed widespread emergencies, distributing food, water, and shelter assistance to hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries. We conducted needs assessments and began to devise immediate and long-term relief and recovery plans in coordination with other international agencies and our chief partner, Eglise Méthodiste d’Haiti (Methodist Church of Haiti, EMH).

Click here to read the Progress Report that describes the UMCOR’s work in the fields of education, health and hygiene, shelter and reconstruction, livelihoods, and capacity strengthening.

Somalia  12 million caught in Africa food crisis

UMCOR is working with partners ACT Alliance, Church World Service, and Global Medic in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia to provide food, clean water, and shelter for those who have been displaced and are living in refugee camps because of drought and hunger in the Horn of Africa. The drought, considered the worst in 50 years, is affecting 11 to 12 million people.

This difference is used to fund Mt.View Outreach activities. Purchase cards with checks or cash between services in the narthex, or contact Glen Strand (glen.strand@comcast.net).

Margaret Becker (Marbeyat) School

One of our Mt View Members, the late Margaret (Peggy) Becker, worked tirelessly in Honduras for the benefit of poor children. As a result, the first private Christian school in Honduras was named in her honor.  It offers a bilingual curriculum for pre-school through 8th grade children and serves some 150 youngsters.  Mt View provides financial support to the Marbeyat School.

Support for UMCOR

The United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR, is often one of the first agencies on the scene of disasters, and one of the last to leave. UMCOR manages United Methodist relief projects all over the world. We support the work of UMCOR not only through monetary donations, but also by periodically providing Health, Sewing Kits, School and Layette Kits, and mission teams. For more information: UMCOR.
